I've been very busy lately with school, so I haven't really had time for a review. Solution? Review a movie we watched in school. I have a history teacher who shows us these historically inaccurate movies because.. Well I'm not sure why. But for ancient China we watched Mulan, for the Middle Ages we watched A Knights Tale, for WWII we're gonna be watching the over exaggerated Pearl Harbor and the sugarcoated Devil's Arithmetic. For WWI we watched this.
Flyboys is the story of a bunch of American pilots who go and blow stuff up and do barrel rolls and date random cross-eyed French women.
And let me just go ahead and say, there's nothing really wrong with Flyboys. Maybe it was the fact that it was so much more enjoyable than schoolwork and it lasted two and a half whole class periods, but I didn't really hate it. While extremely unrealistic, the dog fights were interesting and creative and a lot cooler than like.. a lot of other exaggerated action flicks I've watched like, say, Red Tails.
The cast was interesting but the characters felt really unrealistic. The main character was your typical bad boy who doesn't play by the rules but sticks up for the little guy, has a heart of gold, and naturally excels at whatever he does. You have the seasoned pro who takes a liking to the macho kid and helps him become better. Then you have a jambalaya of characters who could be summed up in two or three word titles (like "the rich kid,""the religious dude," etc).
And the movie is very cliche, but I've seen worse. If you're okay with some so-so writing and some nifty special effects and cinematography, give it a watch next time it's on TV. As for me, I'll leave the historical inaccuracies back in history class.
4.5/10
